2 More Weeks!

Just two more weeks of wonderful summer vacation. And then it's back to work. And back to regular blogging.

Thank you for your patience.

In the meantime, may I recommend "Kung Fu Panda," the new Coldplay album, and watching the LA Angels dominate baseball?

For the few of you wondering about my feelings on the Kotchman/Teixeira trade, my head says yes but my heart says no. I'll miss Kotch. On the other hand, I know and like Teixeira so much that I didn't have to go find out how to spell his name. I will though, from now on, be referring to him as "Tex."

Now back to our regularly scheduled vacation.

I'm 37!

Okay, I'm not 37. That's just a line from my favorite sequence of one of my favorite movies, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

King Arthur approaches a man who is rooting around in the mud. He says, "Old woman!" And, after establishing that he is actually a man, he says, "I'm 37!" Arthur asks, "What?" And he says...

"I'm 37! I'm not old!"

For some reason, that's the line that comes to me every time I start feeling...well...old.

A few weeks ago, it was the stray hairs growing from my ear lobes. "What?" you ask. "Hair growing from ear lobes?" Yes. Apparently that happens.

Then it was my son asking me what those two holes in my head were. After some discussion, it was discovered that he was talking about the areas high and to the left and right on my forehead where hair used to be.

Today it was the trip to the eye doctor.

For the record, they are not bifocals. They are progressive lenses.

Legend

"Legend tells of a legendary warrior...whose kung fu skills were the stuff of legend!"

Now say that with Jack Black's voice and you'll understand why "Kung Fu Panda" was one of my favorite movies of the summer. I kid you not. You will not be disappointed.

This is the longest I've gone without blogging for quite a while. A couple of days there I missed intentionally, but then life got a little crazy and another week was added on for good measure. I'll try not to let it happen again. (Sorry, timeless.)

Things at College are a bit upside down right now. Our youth minister, who did some truly amazing things in the 6 months he was here, has decided to move on. I wish him all the best and covet prayers for the church and especially for the kids. They love him a lot. We are in the midst of a preaching minister search as well. Fortunately, we know that God holds all of this in His mighty hand.

Last night's All Star Game, it should be pointed out, is yet another reason to abandon this ridiculous "This Time It Counts" nonsense. An exhibition game should not decide home field advantage in the World Series. Period.

No, seriously, "Kung Fu Panda." Go see it. Great message. Beautiful animation.

I just spent over an hour deleting e-mail from my inbox and I'm not even half done yet. I may have been letting things slip. I am taking a summer pledge to be better about such things.

My seminary interview is tomorrow and the person setting it up told me not to worry about it. That made me chuckle.

Yesterday my doctor told me that all my labs look great and people would kill for my cholesterol number. (157. Is that really all that great?) In a time when I was beginning to feel my age for the first time, that was nice to hear.

Are you still reading this? You haven't gone to the theater yet? Sure, "Iron Man" was great and "Dark Knight" is going to be awesome. But it is all about "Kung Fu Panda" right now. You think I"m kidding, but I'm really not.

Finally, for now, here is a picture of my wife as a potato.

The Shack

When a new "book phenomenon" sweeps the nation, I am always skeptical. The reason for said skepticism is the fact that I am routinely disappointed by said phenomena.

Case in point: "The Prayer of Jabez."

Ugh.

I just remember turning page after page of that thing thinking, "Really? Really??"

But "The Shack" is something different. No, it wasn't the greatest literature of all time. I mean, I'm reading "East of Eden" right now and that is some fine reading, my friends.

And yeah, I had plenty of problems with tone and theology. Even while I was reading it, I wasn't loving it.

But here's the thing. I keep thinking about it. And I keep quoting it. And it has firmly crept into my spiritual perception. So I have to give more than a little credit. The truth is, if somebody asked me if I would recommend it, I would have to say Yes.

So, as Belloq said to Indy: "Do as you will."
