Demons

The New Testament has a lot to say on the subject of demons.

Are those scriptures still worth our time today? Is there any reason we should study those passages, or would we be better off setting them aside in favor of things that seem more relevant?

Is there still a spirit world? Is it active? Do demons still possess people?

Kind of a light subject today, eh? In one respect I often think of this subject as I would the age old question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" In this case it would be where does one surrender their will and where does the demon take over. I don't understand all there is on this subject but I'm interested in everyone's take.

I know they COULD exist today, but do they as they did in Jesus' time? Don't have a clue. I think any Biblical subject is worth study, but probably my take on this is the demons who indwell humans in today's world are those of alcoholism, drug abuse, and such like. Just my thought.......

The Seattle Times just ran a story on a woman and her boyfriend who murdered her parents over a perceived slight of $60. Then they murdered her brother and his family because they happened to see the two trying to hide the bodies. Do demons exist? How can these atrocities occur if they don't?

Satan is indeed active in our world, and his minions do damaging work every day.

I think we are afraid to talk about this subject because it is like UFOs and Sasquatch. Who wants to stand up and say they have seen an alien? Who wants to stand up and say they have seen a demon/spirit? Even further, just giving time and attention to this study has be just as taboo as heading out to Rosewell covered in aluminum foil and a yielding a camera.

Not only am I NOT kidding, but I'm expecting our song service Sunday to feature plenty of demons.

I've preached / taught on this subject a few times over my 30 years if for no other reason than there is LOT of theological nonsense out there about demons. Do they exist? YES Are they active? Can't read the Old or New Testaments without knowing the answer is affirmative. But there are some really strange ideas and books out there. Let us know how this goes.

If you consider that the spirit world no longer exists, the questions are just as troubling as considering that they still do. Did they die? What happened to them? Why did it change?

Personally, I think what changed is our faith in our own ability to explain the events of our world in non-spiritual terms. Evil is still present and still overtakes man's will to be good. It still leads to madness and destruction. It is still born of the supernatural whether you call it demons or Satan or The Tempter or whatever. Now we see only environmental and genetic explainations where once people more clearly saw it as spirtual issues. Is casper the unfriendly demon taking you over like something from a sci-fi movie? maybe the better question is whether that ever happened. Whether it did or does or not, the fact remains that evil acts as an outside force that will consume us if we do not keep it out with light.

God is at work. Satan too. In all worlds…

I only hope and pray that the better "angels" in my mind will outshout my "demons". Oh yeah, they're there...

Bibical "demons" seem to be so much more "demonic", as in "other world" variety...perhaps it was because of the "times" when Christ had not yet come down to the world or when He did live on this world called Earth...and maybe Satan stepped up his efforts to counter-attack that. Today, Satan continues to be very creative...and sneaky...as he allures the world toward sin, even those who are followers of the Saviour.

This is a scarey subject...but I fully agree with Brady.

I'd rather talk about angels.
