What's On My Desk

Yes, my creativity is at such an apex that today I'm going to simply sit here and list the items on my desk. I call it "writing by looking around."

The truth is, I rarely sit at my desk. It is in an office separate from my classroom and since, thank The Maker, I don't have to share my classroom this year, I spend ALL my time there. But during testing, one of the PE classes uses my room and I end up here. At my desk. Looking around.

By the way, have I ever mentioned that I teach in Room 222? No, seriously. And if that means nothing to you, you are either under 40 or you never watched TV on Friday nights. I keep expecting Karen Valentine to show up.

And now, without further adieu, The Stuff On My Desk:

A book: "Abraham" by Bruce Feiler...to be read after blogging.

A candy jar. Empty.

A baseball with the Stanford logo. Gift from a student.

A phone.

An iPod.

A stuffed mouse wearing a black shirt that says "40." Press his toe and he sings.

Five pictures. One of me holding James shortly after he was born. One from Sadie Hawkins from my first year at Sunnyside. Another of me holding a tiny James with Wild Thing, our school mascot. One of Lisa in her wedding dress throwing her bouquet. (Favorite. Picture. Ever.) And one of Lisa and I photoshopped to look like Han and Leia. (Close. Runner. Up.)

A Wolverine action figure. Gift from a student.

A clay man with no face wearing a shirt with a Pepsi logo on it. Made by a student.

An inflatable pumpkin. Even I have no idea where this came from.

A cell phone.

A graphing calculator.

A little statue of a bear holding a baseball and wearing a cap that says "Mr. Thurman." Gift from a student.

A framed certificate, "Best Teacher In our Hearts," given by my Calculus class from two years ago.

And, oh, yeah, a laptop.

I'm glad I looked around. I feel better now. So, what's on your desk?

Currently on my desk:

Two remotes. One for tv, one for dvd.

Paper towel with the remains of cinnamon toast and an empty coffee mug on it.

Power cord for Luke's iPod.

Wireless router card.

Various pictures... mostly of ships or with similar nautical themes. (This is really more Luke's desk than mine.)

A lamp.

A graphing calculator.

A wireless router.

A cable modem.

Headphones.

Luke's address book.

A printer.

And a laptop.

Oh... and a Scarred Selections (oops... I mean Sacred Selections) hymnal.

On my desk right now:

Paper. Lots of paper. Stacks and stacks. Papers to file, papers to process, papers to ignore, papers to have on hand just in case, papers that could be composted and no one would miss them

A two-hole punch for said filing

Two lamps, one tall (on the right of the monitor) and one short (to the left) to fight eyestrain from being on the computer all day.

My Dayrunner, with a longish to-do list, but that’s OK because I’m being taken out to lunch today, and our home inspection is this afternoon so it’s a short day.

Computer tower, monitor stand and monitor, phone, and cell phone charger

A printing calculator that I only vaguely know how to use (tax and exchange? What are those functions? Will the thing blow up if I try to use them?)

Two (how did I end up with two?) correction tape dispensers, one purple, one teal blue.

A “dish garden” from the office as today is Administrative Professionals Day. I’ve had it two days and it’s already dying a little. Also, last year’s dish garden (almost dead) and a plant for which I’ve held a deathwatch for almost 18 months. When it finally showed no sign of dying I named it.

An almost-empty box of tissue, and an almost-empty roll of TP. I had a cold last week and forgot my new box of tissues one day.

Two paper clip holders, with two sizes of plastic paper clips. They look like confetti, and feel oddly cheerful.

Four sizes of Post-its, a huge pen/pencil/marker/ruler holder, and a really nifty blue stapler that stands up instead of lying flat on the desk and doesn’t hurt my wrist to use.

A little calendar in a stand, with ergonomic exercises on the back of each page. The illustration of the facial stretch is really funny.

One half-empty paper cup of coffee, and one Pepperdine mug that needs to be washed.

A picture of me and Rick taken on the restaurant patio in Malibu where his MBA graduation celebratory lunch was held. I’m wearing the lei I bought for him to wear during graduation. I was very proud. He’s very cute, and has a large brain.

On my east coast desk:
A picture of Steven in his 10 year old All Star uniform.

A picture of Steven from the newspaper article when he hit a homerun against Eau Gallie H.S. this year.

A TI-84 Graphing Calculator.

A picture of my wife, Barbara taken during her first year of teaching.

A plaque from Greg that reads, “How blessed I am
How fortunate I’ve been
That you are my Brother
And also my friend.”
Greg gave this to me when we ate our last meal together at the Outback on Merritt Island just before he moved to SoCal.

Materials for my sub when I head out to Pepperdine next week.

I have three desks in my office. All of them are covered with who knows what as I am slowly trying to get it all packed up for a move. The office, in general, is filled with boxes packed, partially packed, and to be packed. What fun!

If you’ve ever seen (pre-move) Greg’s desk you’ll understand the following comment:

It may take a “knucklehead” to pack all the items on your 3 desks. Nuk-Nuk-Nuk.
